Understanding the Importance of Periodontal Health

November 22, 2018
A healthy smile means more than pearly white teeth – your gums play a major role in what you project to the world, too! And more than that, healthy gums also mean you’re taking an active role in decreasing your risk for conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
Understanding the Importance of Periodontal Health

But there’s one other important upside to keeping your gums healthy, and that has to do with periodontal disease and tooth loss. You see, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults in the US.

How Quantum Dental Helps You Preserve Your Smile

Since gum recession is one of the earliest indicators of gum disease, we’ll carefully track the pockets between your teeth and gums and keep track of their depth. This process is called periodontal charting, and it will help us keep track of any changes and also to make recommendations for changes that you may need to make in your oral health program at home.

If we notice the early signs of gum disease, we’ll recommend treatment such as an increased teeth cleaning schedule so we can stay ahead of any advancement of the disease.

However, if you do experience gum disease that’s too advanced to be effectively treated with more frequent professional cleanings in our office, there are several other solutions that are available.

These include non-surgical periodontal treatment such as the removal of plaque and tartar buildup. Other options include the removal of damaged tissue through a process known as scaling, or the smoothing of tooth roots to prevent future plaque and tartar buildup through a process known as root planning, and last, prescribing an oral or topical antibiotic to limit the amount of plaque bacteria that are being produced in your mouth.
